About

Alex was born and raised in North Queensland and was introduced to gastrointestinal medicine at a young age by his father who is a gastroenterologist. After completing school, Alex went on to study medicine the James Cook University where he travelled to rural and remote Queensland on a number of medical placements.

Upon completion of his medical degree, Alex travelled to Brisbane to complete 2 resident years before becoming a surgical registrar. During surgical training he was based in North Queensland the with majority of training being completed in Townsville and Cairns. In the latter part of surgical training, Alex started to develop an interest in research and he since completed a graduate certificate of research methods at JCU and he is keen to pursue a higher degree.

When Alex completed his surgical training, he travelled to Melbourne to further his colorectal career at the St. Vincent’s Hospital. Working at St. Vincent’s in a quaternary inflammatory bowel disease unit gave him great insight into it’s management. From St. Vincent’s Hospital, Alex went on to work at the Footscray Hospital, Melbourne, where he was accredited as a CSSANZ fellow. Footscray hospital is one of the busiest colorectal units in the country and has a high volume of cancer work, involving advanced or complex patients. Alex’s second year as a CSSANZ colorectal fellow was completed at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, which is home to Queensland’s only peritonectomy service.

As a consultant, Alex returned to Townsville where he had a high volume public and private colorectal practice. During his time at the public hospital, he was active in developing surgical education for registrars and medical students. As part of General Surgeons Australia, Alex was also appointed a co-ordinator of the state wide registrar teaching program. For his efforts in teaching, Alex has received the GSA excellence in teaching award in 2023.

Due to family reasons Alex has returned to Brisbane to again have a busy public and private practice, working at the Wesley and Princess Alexandra Hospitals. Here he hopes to continue to provide a high level of personalised and evidence based care for all of his patients.
